Why We Focus on Health

hospital

United Way of the Columbia-Willamette invests in programs that help Individuals improve and maintain their physical and mental health.

Funded programs also ensure that individuals are safe from domestic and family violence and provide help for people with addictions. Health care access programs focus on services to the uninsured.

Mental Health and Addictions

The needs of people with mental health issues are growing while funding for services has declined. Just 39% of Oregonians in need of public mental health from multiple conditions, such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder cite high health care costs and a lack of adequate insurance as the primary barriers to treatment.

Many individuals forego services because of the stigma associated with seeking mental health and addiction services. This stigma results from a common misunderstanding of behavioral health illnesses and their origins.

Health Care Access

Finding and affording health and mental health care is getting harder especially for our working poor. In our community, over 314,000 people have no health insurance. Some 84 percent of the uninsured are members of working families.

People without health coverage are less likely to have a regular doctor and less likely to seek and receive care when sick. Poor health and unmet medical needs create barriers to finding and maintaining stable housing and employment.
