Wes and Nancy Lematta
2009 Robert G. Miller Achievement Award

It was more than just an elegant gathering of civic and business leaders expressing their support of United Way. This year’s Major Gifts Reception, held September 16 at The Governor Hotel, was a heartfelt “thank you” for the generosity of local individuals and families who help boost United Way’s work.

Over 100 letters from people whose lives were changed by United Way adorned the tables. Dr. Mark Rosenberg, a volunteer physician and board chair of the United Way-supported Project Access NOW, spoke about the impact of the program on patients, their families and community. Project Access NOW is a four-county program that coordinates charity care across hospital systems and clinics to improve health care access among the uninsured. Guests also heard from Maria S. who received much-needed medical help through the program.

“It’s extremely rewarding to hear first-hand about how our investments are making a difference,” says Al Jubitz, past United Way campaign chair, who now leads the Major Gifts Committee.

“Yet, no one can deny that, with the economic downturn, there’s so much more unmet need in our community. That’s why your continued support is so important,” said Jubitz.

Philanthropists Wes and Nancy Lematta, recipients of the 2009 Robert G. Miller Achievement Award, were honored at the event, which welcomed over 150 guests. The Lemattas have been giving to United Way for more than 25 years. Through various philanthropic activities and The Lematta Foundation, Wes and Nancy provide support to a number of Washington and Oregon organizations committed to health care and cancer research.

In receiving the Robert G. Miller Achievement award, the Lemattas join the elite ranks of highly respected beacons of philanthropy in our region. Last year, United Way honored Ken and Marta Thrasher, well-known for their commitment to supporting education and the arts. Previous award recipients also include John D. Gray, developer of John’s Landing and Sunriver; Marcia Randall, head of The Robert D. and Marcia H. Randall Charitable Trust; and the award’s namesake, Bob Miller, CEO of Albertsons LLC.

The event was made possible by the generous support of Bob and Sharon Miller. Special thanks to members of United Way’s Tocqueville Society for their continued leadership in building a stronger community. Click to learn more about the Tocqueville Society.
