United Way Young Leaders Society Spotlight:
Josh and Lyndsay Huffman

“It’s been great to be a part of United Way Young Leaders Society as a couple. When we moved to Portland we didn’t know many people, and YLS gave us a place to meet people with similar community involvement interests. It’s also been fun bringing new friends to the meetings to introduce them to the opportunities YLS provides,” states Lyndsay Huffman.
When Josh and Lyndsay Huffman first heard about United Way, they were working in Klamath Falls, where they met. Josh said that at the time he wasn’t clear about United Way’s mission or how it could fit into his life as a young professional.
He said that United Way’s mission and vision are what first drew him to the organization. “I don’t have a singular passion for one particular cause,” said Josh. “I appreciate that United Way is working to solve the biggest issues in our community – education, income, and health – together.”
Since that time, Josh and Lyndsay have moved to Portland where Josh works for a marketing and communications agency and Lyndsay works for a local architecture firm. She also serves on the Marketing Committee for United Way’s Young Leaders Society.
Both felt that something was missing from their lives when they first heard about YLS, and wanted to get involved “in something bigger than themselves,” he said. After learning about the different YLS activities, they quickly realized that joining the group would fill the gap.
Between the personal growth offered by the educational seminars, opportunities to meet with successful business leaders through the Lunch with Leaders series, and various volunteer events, Josh and Lyndsay enjoy the balance the YLS brings to their lives.
As Vice Chair of the YLS Marketing Committee, Lyndsay is excited to see YLS membership continue to grow. She sees the main job of the YLS Marketing Committee as supporting the Membership Committee, and is working with the committee to find new ways to reach more members.
