Our Home Share Pilot Program

We are thrilled to announce an innovative new partnership between United Way of the Columbia-Willamette and the Portland Housing Bureau. Together, we are launching the Home Share Pilot, a 12-month program designed to transform how we think about housing stability and community support in our region.

At its core, Home Share is about more than just square footage - it is about the power of shared resources. By connecting homeowners who have extra space with neighbors seeking affordable options, this pilot creates a flexible, mutually beneficial solution that strengthens the social and financial fabric of our community.

A Practical Solution for Homeowners

For many in our community, especially those on fixed incomes, the rising costs of home maintenance and property taxes can be a significant burden. The Home Share Pilot offers a practical path toward financial stability.

  • Supplemental Income: Homeowners can generate consistent monthly income by utilizing existing space, helping to offset housing costs.
  • Enhanced Well-being: Beyond the financial relief, home sharing addresses the growing challenge of social isolation. A shared home often leads to new companionship and a greater sense of security.
  • Professional Support: Through qualified providers like PadSplit and Home Share Oregon, homeowners receive expert assistance with background checks and tailored rental agreements, ensuring a smooth and professional experience.
Expanded Opportunities for Renters

As traditional rental markets become increasingly difficult to navigate, Home Share provides a vital alternative for individuals seeking a place to call home without the barrier of massive security deposits.

  • Affordability: By capping rent and eliminating security deposits for participants, the program ensures that housing remains accessible.
  • Intergenerational Connection: This model fosters unique opportunities for diverse age groups and backgrounds to live together, breaking down social barriers and building a stronger sense of belonging.
How the Pilot Works

Starting February 2026, the Portland Housing Bureau is offering one-time grants to eligible homeowners who rent out spare rooms through a qualified provider.

Grant Details:

  • $1,000 for the first room rented.
  • $500 for each additional room.

Key Requirements:
To ensure the program benefits those it is intended to serve, participants must meet specific criteria, including:

  • The homeowner must reside in the same dwelling as the tenant.
  • Rent must be capped at $200 per week, including utilities.
  • No security deposit can be charged for the tenancy.
  • The room must be rented through a Qualified Home Sharing Provider for at least 12 months.
How to Apply

After 30 days of a successful rental, homeowners simply request a receipt from their provider and submit it along with a self-attestation form to our team at HomeShare@unitedway-pdx.org.

This partnership represents a bold step forward in creating adaptable, community-centric housing. We believe that by opening our doors to one another, we can build a more resilient and connected Columbia-Willamette region.
