Volunteer Spotlight: Camille Bell

Days after MLK Weekend of Service 2019 has come to an end, Dr. King's message of giving back has still remained at the forefront of our community. Hands on Greater Portland, a volunteer program of United Way, has brought in thousands of volunteers over the years, and they have all played integral roles in adding value back into our region by providing their dedicated time. We sat down with volunteer leader Camille Bell to hear about what motivates her to be part of this important program.

When and how did you get involved with Hands On Portland?

Volunteers Knit Handmade Goods for Families in Need

As temperatures drop, we see hats, scarves and sweaters pulled from the depths of our closets, ready to brave the cold months ahead. But for vulnerable families in our community, the availability of winter gear can be hard to come by – especially for young kids who need it the most.

Fortunately, over the last 12 years, United Way’s Hands on Greater Portland volunteer program has offered a monthly volunteer project aimed to help our community stay clothed and comforted during brisk weather – specifically helping the littlest members.

Over 1,500 Local Volunteers Join Forces During MLK Weekend of Service

“At a time when people are feeling fractured and divided, volunteerism is the great connector,” said United Way President and CEO Keith Thomajan.

That connection was strong over MLK weekend when over 1,500 volunteers donated their time to 64 nonprofit projects in the Portland metro area to honor Dr. King's legacy. They spruced up libraries and school gardens, weatherized homes for low-income seniors, packaged donated food — and so much more. By the end of the holiday weekend, 4,229 volunteer hours added a value of $102,130 to the community.
